Chapter 5: Making the Interview Work On Assignment Questions pgs. 115-116

1. Write a short definition of each of these terms:

A)     –est Question: (words such as proudest, saddest,  biggest and so forth) a question that tends to be “high schoolish,” and its simplicity can distort people’s views

B)     Formal Interview: a type of discourse that is planned and set up in advance

C)     Off the Record: using information given without providing the name of the source

D)     Open-Ended Question: a type of discourse that will get a quotable response

E)     Primary Source: experts and reliable citizens who know the facts first-handedly

F)      Q and A: an effective technique where the reporter’s exact questions are reproduced, followed by the source’s exact answers

G)     Stock Question: all-purpose questions usable in any situation

3. Select one of the following historical figures to interview. Do some research into the person’s life and times, then develop your interview questions. You may be asked to role-play the interview with another student.

Paul Robeson

*    As a renowned epitome 20th century Renaissance man, what would you say that out of all of the marvelous talents you possess would best give you the most pride over?

*    Your intellectuality and personal aspirations has opened up new avenues to pursue your career while at the same time it has contributed to make enemies simply by a misconception about your viewpoint towards social injustice. What obstacles did you face as a black man in the prejudice America where blacks were seen as second-class citizens?

*    How did you live your life knowing that no matter how successful you were there was always the status quo that didn’t grant you the entitlement that every citizen should have?

5. Prepare all the questions you want to ask of someone newsworthy in your school or community, in the order you want to ask them. Exchange your list with that of another student and critique each other’s approach. What was missed? Did you include follow-up questions? Keep your refined list handy for writing an interview story later.

Elmo the Muppet from Sesame Street

*    As a toddler educator, your 37 years educating young hearts and minds has given you the stardom that you now possess by having your own series in Sesame Street titled Elmo’s World. What do you believe has influenced you throughout your career to be in the point you are in today?

*    Longtime fans of Sesame Street resent your now-prominent status, which has caused some older characters to see reduced roles. As an educator of character, what would you respond to your fans that have learned as toddlers the importance of equality?

8. Do the reporters on TV shows such as 60 Minutes have an advantage over local reporters? What techniques are available to a network reporter who comes to town for one story that might not be available to a local reporter, who must deal with the same sources over and over? Write a short essay on your thoughts.

I believe that reporters that are renowned nationally have the advantage that compared to local reporters. The nationally acclaimed reporters of network stations have the benefit entitled to them and can easily acquire their news because they are well-known and powerful compared to the local stations. In other words, the network reporters can easily attain the information they need without trying as hard as the local stations. Also, the network reporters cover the news of the whole nation so therefore their newscasts always contain various news headlines than those of the local reporters who only tend to become repetitive due to insufficient news coverage.
